Senior Public Servants Contribute to Compensation Savings

May 4, 2017

Premier Brad Wall today said Government Deputy Ministers and Crown Corporation Presidents and CEOs have taken a 3.5 per cent salary reduction effective May 1, 2017.

This is in keeping with the government’s commitment to reduce total compensation costs across the public sector by about 3.5 per cent.

“Compensation is a significant expense for the provincial government and these senior public servants know it is important to share the responsibility for addressing the financial challenges,” Wall said.  “I want to thank the Deputy Ministers and Crown Presidents for their willingness to lead by example.”

The reduction for Deputy Ministers and Crown Corporation Presidents is expected to save about $280,000 a year.

“There are a number of ways to achieve savings across the broader public sector,” Wall said.  “We are not prescribing any specific measures.  Instead, our government, as the funder of public sector compensation, has a reduction target of $250 million or about 3.5 per cent.  We are hopeful that the various employers and their respective bargaining units will work together and achieve these savings through negotiation.”

Out-of-scope public sector employees will also see their compensation reduced similar to unionized employees once settlements are in place.
